Addressing the Store Clerk That Left Me Totally Without Words – I Salute You
The scene was a Sunday morning, and I was in a foul mood, filling up my mother's vehicle. The location was one of those petrol stations that doubles as a convenience store, which often leads of ending up in line shoppers with carts of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to happen when your only desire is to get gasoline and leave. Terrible.
My position was fourth among those waiting. A single cashier operating, a youthful clerk. Something stood out about her. When the faffer at the head of the line had finally paid for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, It seemed to me I heard the cashier wish him an excellent day. Unusual. Could be I misunderstood, or maybe she did say it and meant it ironically. I pondered if she could even be a comrade in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for people who hold up people just getting gas including me.
Advancing next, now third in line. The next shopper of our line finished pumping gas with impressive quickness. And there it was again: “Have a wonderful day.” No, actually, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and few locals says to others such a cheerful phrase, or even just a nice day. Very rare. You don’t get US citizens visiting this town, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else.
I was second now. Following a senior shopper engaged in a protracted effort with her basket, her purchases, her handbag and her membership pass. This took an eternity. Once completed, she too was wished to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark at the cashier, to observe that response when they look at you, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “You are very amusing.” Yet no idea came of a funny comment to utter.
In the end, I embraced for the absolute sincerity – or a performance of it, which amounts to no different – as she gazed straight at me, to my very core, and told me to have a great day. My spirits lifted. A positive experience.
