Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced that he will personally create this new product as part of a personal series showcasing issues the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after many years of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
