New Year's Celebrants Advised to Bundle Up with Snowfall Predicted Across the UK
Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Continue Despite Alerts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.
Fireworks Under Clear but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, making additional clothing vital, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.
The Mercury Forecast to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Advisories Activated
In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather could to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
